MySQL is the world's most popular open source database management system. MySQL is used by popular websites including Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Yahoo!, WordPress, Joomla, phpBB, Drupal and many more.

A database is an organized collection of data. A database management system in application that interacts with end users, other applications, and the database itself to capture and analyse data.

MySQL is a central component of the LAMP open-source web application software stack. LAMP is an acronym for "Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP", the most common software stack used for building dynamic web sites and web applications.

In the light of MySQL's acquisition by Oracle, Monty Widenius, one of MySQL founders, started a fork called MariaDB aimed to maintain compatibility with Oracle-provided versions.
